Geological Survey of Japan, AIST

Greetings

NAKAO Shinsuke, Director General, Geological Survey of Japan The Geological Survey of Japan (GSJ) is only one national center in Japan for geological research, with its roots in the Geological Survey, which was established in 1882. GSJ's core research activities involve developing and expanding geological information of Japan’s national territory and surrounding marine areas, while promoting the dissemination and utilization of geological information.

From April 2025, the sixth Medium- to Long-Term Plan (seven years) of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) has begun. AIST's mission is to continuously create innovations that contribute to solving social issues and strengthening Japan's industrial competitiveness. It addresses three social issues: energy, environment, resource constraints; response to a declining and aging population; and realization of a resilient society.

Within this framework, GSJ promotes geological information development and utilization, as well as research and studies for the ensuring stable energy and resource supply, conservation and utilization of the geosphere environment, and mitigating and preventing natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions. By accelerating the social implementation of research results, GSJ contributes to building a sustainable and resilient nation and society. GSJ also takes on the challenge of global research issues through various forms of collaboration and cooperation with geological research institutes around the world.

GSJ will continue to innovate and strive to disseminate high-quality research results and geological information to society through geological surveys and to solve social issues in Japan and around the world.

We appreciate your understanding and support.
